(Above) International Visitor Catherine Cardiff receives Honorary Citizenship with the City of Pensacola from Deputy Mayor Jewel Cannada-Wynn.

The June 2009 Project on Youth and the Arts

Ms. Catherine Cardiff of New Zealand started her time in Pensacola with an orientation to the Pensacola arts community hosted by Catherine Guin & Heather Holloway of the Arts Council of Northwest Florida.  Suzanne Robbert of Artel Gallery, Jerre Brisky of the UWF Center for Fine and Performing Arts, and Ayinde Hurrey of Hurrey-UP Stage & Filmworks spoke about their work and answered her questions regarding community support and funding.

Next, Ms. Cardiff met with Deputy Mayor & City Councilwoman Jewel Cannada-Wynn to discuss the Community Redevelopment Agency, the Belmont Arts Center, and art as a tool for economic development.  At the meeting, Ms. Cardiff and her U.S. Department of State accompanying officer received honorary citizenship with the City of Pensacola.  Afterwards, Ms. Cardiff headed to the Belmont Arts Center where Vivian Lamont, Rudy Pendleton, Jose London, and students of the Belmont Youth Band welcomed her to the area with a performance which Ms. Cardiff later described as “brilliant.”

Other professional appointments included meeting with Samantha Holsworth to learn about the summer camp program of the Pensacola Little Theatre, talking with Patrick Jennings, Educational Coordinator of the Pensacola Museum of Art, discussing the educational programs of the Pensacola Opera with Tim Kennedy, and learning about Chain Reaction from high school volunteer Rachel Jones.

On her second day in town, Ms. Cardiff gave a luncheon presentation on the arts in New Zealand which was well received by Council members and friends.  Audience members were intrigued by the extent to which arts are featured in the educational system of New Zealand, peppering the question and answer session with lively discussion.

Downtime for this project included dinner in the Istvan & Jennell Peteranecz home, gelato at Joe Patti’s, and a brief swim in the Gulf.
