The May 2009 Delegation on the Role of NGOs and Global Women's Issues

Dr. Jack Kichler greeted our May group at the airport and then accompanied them to our annual membership party hosted in the lovely East Hill Victorian of Pat Windham. The delegation consisted of seven women representing Albania, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Pakistan, and Romania who examined "The Role of NGOs and Global Women's Issues" while in the country.
Over the weekend they sunned on the beach and enjoyed a Children's Chorus performance featuring elements of the heritage of Pensacola. Saturday evening they attended the North Hill Preservation Association Spring Party with North Hill residents and participants from the Battle of Pensacola reenactment which had taken place earlier in the day. On Mother's Day, several delegates attended various worship services compliments of the coordination efforts of Dr. Kichler. Later in the evening, the visitors enjoyed home hospitality with members Laura & Joseph Boyles, Jennell & Istvan Peteranecz, Rita & Dennis Kohli, and Carol & Hal Malt.
The professional program began with a well-received introduction to the demographics of the city by Councilwoman Diane Mack who also discussed the challenges of women participating in politics at the local level. As several of the ladies had run for office or were considering running, this meeting was particularly lively. They peppered Mrs. Mack with questions regarding her own campaign strategy and shared some of their own experiences. Mayor Mike Wiggins then welcomed the ladies to the city and joined Mrs. Mack in presenting each with honorary citizenship.
Caroline Harnett and Lori Perkins next met with the group to discuss the Krewe du YaYas, their fundraising efforts, and the strides made by the local chapter of the American Cancer Society against breast cancer. At the Pearl Nelson Child Development Center at ARC Gateway, the delegation met with Chain Reaction students. They learned about the structure of the teen organization and then volunteered with students in the center. At Pensacola High School they learned about career academies and the International Baccalaureate Program while at Holy Cross Episcopal Church they learned about Girl Scouting from Rachel Iverson, Pat Madison, and the mothers, volunteers, and girls participating in the program. Holly Jurnovoy helped to round out the program by inviting the ladies to attend the IMPACT 100 "How IMPACTful Are We" event where past grant recipients spoke about the difference that IMPACT funding made on their organizations.
